The Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) is holding a series of free
conferences on tackling bullying outside of school settings –
starting later this month. The events – being held across the
country, are aimed at professionals working with children and young
people in the community, as well as those in further education.
ABA recognises that bullying doesn’t simply stop at the
school gates, it happens on the street, in youth and leisure
settings, during journeys and in children’s homes. Despite this
anti-bullying strategies tend to be aimed at teachers and school
staff.
Mark Vickers, ABA lead on Tackling Bullying in the Community,
said: ‘As well as working to stop bullying in schools, ABA is now
working to stop bullying in our communities too. We need to equip
colleagues in community settings with the skills and confidence to
tackle the issue, so that children and young people feel safe in
every setting. When bullying takes place outside of school on
public transport for example, it can render leisure activities
inaccessible to vulnerable young people.’
The first three events are taking place in Newcastle, Manchester
and York over the coming months:
